Discussion:
VS 2005 Help File Search
(too old to reply)

Any time I use the Search feature in Visual Studio 2005 Help window, I get no
hits for Local Help even though I installed the full help documentation to my
local computer and event though I can view contents. The search comes up
with hits under MSD Online, Codezone Community, and Questions, but even when
I search for something well known like "New" I get no search results under
Local Help. I have Tools - Options - Help - Online, "When Loading Help
content" set to "Try local first, then online", but after I click search the
other sections (MSDN Online, Codezone, etc.) always fill up with hits first,
then Local says "searching" for a while and always ends up with nothing.

I simply want to use my local help documentation to search for help. How do
I do this?

Thanks,
-Carl

Hi Carl,

I suggest you can check the following settings first:

1.Uncheck all the filter setting in the MSDN for Visual Studio 2005's
search feature list: which just below the search textbox. Make the
"Language", "Technology" and "Content Type" filters to All.

2.Make sure the "Local Help" entry has been checked in the MSDN for Visual
Studio 2005's Tools/Option dialog's "Search these providers" list box.

Then if your MSDN for VS2005's local search still doesn't work, I am afraid
you may need to remove and reinstall it again for a test.

Thanks for your understanding!

Thanks, I did as you suggested and it worked. Now I get local search results
as expected. Interestingly I went back in and unchecked a few of the filter
options under Language and Technology and it still seems to work, so that is
great too. It is strange though that I get search results back from the
internet almost immediately (the 3 internet categories fill up in less than 2
or 3 seconds, but the local always takes longer, around 10 seconds or more.

You are welcome, Carl, I am glad to know your MSDN local search works
again, it appears the performance of your internet connection is somehow
better than your machine's hard disk access.:)

Good Luck!
